Facilitate staff and external trainings in culturally-responsive teaching methodologies

"Members were struck by the immediate and pronounced shifts in perspective orchestrated by the tour facilitators... More than just confronting biases, this method shined light on the vast amount of unknown information—the untold stories of our colleagues, the people around us, and the art itself. The revelations we experienced underscored the importance of understanding the complete narrative in appreciating each other and our world. This deeper comprehension of missing narratives was key to our understanding and significantly transformative.

Train Phillips Educators in student-centered, inquiry-based, and culturally-responsive approaches that:

  • Empower learners to express themselves

  • Adapt teaching to multiple learning styles

  • Help visitors feel comfortable at the museum

  • Align teaching with the museum’s DEAI & education best practices

Train MASS MoCA's new seasonal tour guides three times a year:

  • Restructured the tour training program to include both content- and technique-based training sessions with curators, educators, and seasoned guides

  • Facilitated peer and one-on-one practice tours.

Anti-Racism Staff Learning & Development

Originated idea to train internal facilitators to lead, and led group for, 10-week Anti-Racism Staff Learning & Development that:

  • Created shared language among all Phillips staff

  • Built knowledge, skills, and awareness around systemic oppression issues

  • Facilitated open dialogue that both supported and challenged staff members in their understanding and practice of anti-racism as a way of being

Fostering Diversity & Inclusion across Italy

In partnership with the US Department of State, The Phillips Collection collaborated with museums across Italy in fostering diversity and inclusion for audience and program development.

How can we create a visionary design of a museum—as a place for people to meet and converse? How are we breaking expectations for how people experience museums? We explored these questions and exchanged ideas for how the future of museums and the arts can be imbued with principles of diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
